Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree with a minor in Sustainability Studies – Spring 2013
about lindsey
I am a third- year student at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities working towards a Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree with a minor in Sustainability Studies. My expected graduation date is Spring 2013. I also enjoy challenging my creative abilities through painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking.
My Architecture classes have taught me that architecture’s uniqueness comes from its involvement with almost every discipline. It must take into consideration advances in science and technology, the environment, safety, cost, aesthetic appeal, functionality, personal expression, etc. I believe in the importance of balancing these areas when designing and constructing our built environment. Architecture not only encompasses many different topics, but it also serves as a place where successions are made in other fields.
I believe architecture should incorporate the progressions of a particular society, thereby making it a reflection of that current culture. Although buildings are built for a present purpose, it is important to remember that architecture is always a progression of the past. While looking at the architecture of any particular society the observer is able to determine some precedent to a previous structure. Also, in recent years we have realized the importance of building for the future by making environmentally conscious designs.
I have just started to learn about the complexity of our natural environment through my additional studies in sustainability throughout the past two years. We must protect our environment by minimizing pollution, conserving resources, and limiting energy use. It is important that we consider the natural environment when selecting a site location, during building design, and during the construction process. I am optimistic about the future and hope to be a part of positive changes in the field.
