Paper Jacket – Translating the formal qualities of a building’s façade into the design of a hand-crafted paper jacket

Paper Jacket

The purpose of this project was to translate the formal qualities of a building’s facade into the design of a paper jacket. The jacket could not look like the building analyzed, but had to show a deeper understanding of its architectural characteristics. The jacket had to be made completely out of paper.

I chose to analyze the Monterrey Central Library, a building designed by Francisco Asensio Cerver. The building cohesively combines brick and exposed concrete into two very different geometric structures. In order to translate the building’s design into my paper jacket, I wove the front panels to create a pattern grown out of the construction and overlaid them across the front of the body, as with that of the library. Leaving the rest to its original form revealed the natural beauty of the material. Although the exposed concrete plays a more subtle role in the overall appearance of the library, it governs the design and function similarly to that of my jacket.
